Hello Sunshine! Blue skies, summer sunshine, the feel of the warm sand between your toes, and what have we described? A perfect beach day. When choosing to use this photo an emotion of good times and fun were elicited. Going to the beach is a summertime excursion and as part of our Everyday Life Series.

Now let’s begin our adventure of creating our layout. Before choosing a background page, study the photo at hand. Look at the colors in the photo; what are the colors in the photo that you want to accentuate? Looking at the photo there is blue and a bit of yellow a reflection from the sun. Blue and yellow are the colors we are going to base our entire layout on.

Our background paper that we have chosen is yellow back that is showing the rays of sun. We are going to use this background paper as our so-called “canvas” to build the layout using the selected photo. Being that the beach is the focal point; we have selected borders based on the colors in the photo being blue, and hot pink to add a splash of color and we will be using our chosen papers to build our layout layering various papers to add dimension to the layout.

Let’s start to take our “canvas” from being plain to a colorful dimensional layout. As mentioned previously, our 12 x 12 background page is yellow with rays of yellow in the background. As you can see the yellow background was chosen, because the photo has a hint of yellow playing off of the sand, and we wanted to play off that color in the layout. We wanted to continue our focus on the yellow color, so we then added a border using a bright pink and a pale blue. By placing the hot pink background under the photo, makes the blue sky more pronounced, and draws your eye right to the framed photo.

Based on the colors chosen for the background page and borders, we now have to think about what we want to use to frame our photo. For this particular photo, we chose to create a 5 x 7 rectangle in a pale blue to frame our photo. We chose a subtle blue that is similar in color to the pale blue border to give the layout a cohesive look.

We have the background page, and the framing of the photo chosen; now we want to think about what we want to have the layout convey. By looking at the photo, and the colors that we have chosen thus far, we want to add items that convey beach, and the ocean. A journaling card “Good Times” was used to illustrate that the people posing for the photo are having a good time. Another journaling card “Peace Love & Sandy Feet” was used to illustrate the love of the beach and having sandy feet.

There are a couple of more items we want to add to the layout. We want to add some embellishments and paper die cuts. Choose embellishments and paper die cuts to enhance your page. Embellishments and paper die cuts are used to get a response of WOW. When most people look at a page in a scrapbook, it’s not always the photo that gets there attention as much as what is used on the page to get a response.

There are many die cuts one can use to represent the beach and the ocean. A group of paper embellishments were used to illustrate being on a boat. The paper embellishments that were used were a pair swimming trunks, a pair of sunglasses, and a pair of flip-flops. We placed these elements around the photo being that the photo is the focal point of the layout.

The bottom line is, you want to create a scrapbook layout that has a cohesive look. Fun background page, borders, frames, embellishments, and paper die cuts are used to help depict the story you are trying to tell. More importantly, have fun with your pages.
