As we continue with Gratitude series, this month it is all about understanding how blessed you are on a daily basis. We will be putting our emphasis on the saying and basing our layout using colors in the quote. The saying is as follows: “Smile Often, Laugh a lot, And Realize How Blessed You Are.”

It sounds easy to Smile Often, Laugh A Lot, and And Realize How Blessed You Are. How many of us actually do any of these things on a daily basis. We are now going to illustrate how to take this simple saying and create a fun and whimsical layout.

The focal point of the layout is the journaling card. We are going to create our layout around the journaling card. We are now going to look at the color of the journaling card. Based on the color from the journaling card we want to find a background page and borders to help bring out the color of the journaling card and bring the saying to the forefront. That being said, we chose a 12 x 12 background page in mustard yellow to be the base of our layout. We are then going to use a layering technique to build upon the layout and give more emphasis to the saying.

As we mentioned, we will be using a layering technique to build our layout. First we chose an 8.5 x 11 green and white polka dot sheet to place over our background page. Then we placed an 8 x 9.5 multi-colored sheet with pink, orange, and blue. Combining these two, will allow the saying to “pop” a bit more on the page utilizing the colors in the layout.

Next we will choose our borders for the layouts. A border with positive words such, as “there’s nothing like a big blue sky and a day spent with you.” Another great one is Happiness is big dreams, sunbeams, and smiles. This border was chosen as you can see for the bright color as well as for the positive message. This border certainly adds to feelings we want to express in this layout.

Now that we have our elements, we can now glue all of the items down. The 8.5 x 11 green and white polka dot sheet was the first item that was secured first. Next was the 8 x 9.5 multi colored sheet was glued, along with the 6 x 6 border. Once these elements were secure, we then started to think about placement of the journaling card, embellishments, and paper die cuts we wanted to use in this layout.

The color scheme as been sorted out. We want to now have a fun and whimsical feel to the layout. So we chose not to frame the saying. We then chose to use fun whimsical die cuts and embellishments that are very freeing and sassy to illustrate our gratitude saying.

Lastly, our embellishments and die cuts were added. The embellishments and die cuts added represent the idea of smiling often, laughing a lot, and realizing how blessed you are. That being said, we chose embellishments that represented nature. In our minds, flowers are the best form of nature that illustrates the saying best. We also chose die cuts such as arrows and a ring of circles to represent going full circle as far as having the realization that you are blessed by many things in your life. Remember, when using embellishments, paper die cuts, or stickers they are meant to be used to give your layout a bit of “pop” to your page. They are not meant to overwhelm the viewer. When in doubt, less is more.

Let the words take center stage and there is no need for photos. The use of background paper, embellishments, die cuts, and stickers will help us create a world of gratitude. Thanks for stopping by and stay tuned for our Gratitude page for April.
