Spring is now upon us. It’s that time of year where there is longer days of light, ice cream trucks, and children laughing playing in playgrounds and jungle gyms. What better way to document the joys of springtime by creating a scrapbook layout of your children enjoying the days of spring? This week for our “Everyday Life” series, we are using a photo of a children playing outside enjoying a sunny spring day.

If you have a lot of photos, and don’t know what to use, narrow it down to one or two. For the layout on the right, two photos were used with children playing on a jungle gym. Before choosing a background page, study the photos at hand. Look at the colors in the photos; what are the colors in the photos that you want to accentuate? Looking at the photos there is a lot of green. The lush green in the photos usually symbolizes the time of growth when nature is in full bloom.

Once the background paper has been selected, this is your so-called “canvas” to build your layout using the selected photos. Being the theme is playing on a jungle gym; we have selected borders with red, white, blue, and green to complement the olive green background paper. We have chosen a border with multiple colors placed on the left side of the layout with the wording “You are Awesome.” Again, using our theme of borders with multiple colors placing that border across the bottom of the layout.

Based on the colors chosen for the background page and borders, we now have to think about what we want to use to frame our photo. For the photos, we chose to create a 5 x 5 rectangle in brown and a layered squared frame as a smaller background paper to layer on top of the larger background paper to “frame” our photo. If you are not crafty, you can also buy pre-made frames at your local craft store. Just be sure to choose a frame that compliments your photo/photos. If your photos are busy, use a simpler frame. If your photos are very plain without much color, you may want to use a frame with more color and pizzazz.

We have the background page, and the framing of the photo chosen; now we want to think about what we want to have the layout convey. By looking at the photo, and the colors that we have chosen thus far, we want to add items that convey springtime the children in the photos are playing on the jungle gym without a care in the world. As mentioned earlier, a border with the wording “You are Awesome” was used to illustrate that the children in the photos are awesome at what they are doing. The border that was chosen is doing double duty in the layout. It is being used as a border as well as being a journaling card illustrating the activities of the children.

There are a couple of more items we want to add to the layout. We want to add some embellishments and paper die cuts. Choose embellishments and paper die cuts to enhance your page. Embellishments and paper die cuts are used to get a response of WOW. When most people look at a page in a scrapbook, it’s not always the photo that gets there attention as much as what is used on the page to get a response.

There are many embellishments and paper die cuts one can use to represent spring time and representing the activities of the children in the layout. Embellishments used for the layout of the wording “fearless” and “amazing” illustrating the achievement of swinging on the jungle gym. A paper die of tree was used to hone in on the lush color of the greens and things being in bloom during springtime.

The bottom line is, you want to create a scrapbook layout that has a cohesive look. Fun background page, borders, frames, embellishments, and paper die cuts are used to help depict the story you are trying to tell. More importantly, have fun with your pages.
